POP MARX

Karl Marx (1818–1883) was a German philosopher, economist, political theorist, and author whose critiques of capitalism fundamentally reshaped global politics and intellectual history. Born in Trier, Marx studied law and philosophy at the universities of Bonn and Berlin, where he became deeply influenced by Hegelian philosophy. His outspoken journalism drew the ire of European authorities, forcing him into a life of political exile across Paris, Brussels and London. Alongside his lifelong collaborator and financial benefactor Friedrich Engels, Marx sought to dismantle what he viewed as the inherently exploitative nature of industrial capitalism. His philosophy of historical materialism asserted that human societies develop through conflict between social classes - the wealthy bourgeoisie who own the means of production and the working-class proletariat who must sell their labour to survive.

Marx’s monumental body of work provided both the theoretical foundation and the revolutionary blueprint for modern socialism and communism. In 1848, he and Engels published The Communist Manifesto, a concise, urgent pamphlet that famously declared all history to be the history of class struggle and predicted the inevitable overthrow of capitalism by a unified working class. Marx spent his final decades in London engaged in meticulous economic research at the British Museum, culminating in his masterwork, Das Kapital (Capital), a rigorous, multi-volume critique of the capitalist system's inner mechanics, alienation, and tendency toward self-destruction. Though he died in relative obscurity, Marx’s intellectual legacy sparked the global labour movements, revolutions and geopolitical divisions of the twentieth century, cementing him as one of the most influential figures in human history.
