CHINESE CHARACTERISTICS

'Socialism with Chinese characteristics' is the official ideological framework of the Communist Party of China (CPC), representing a pragmatic adaptation of Marxism-Leninism to the country's specific socio-economic conditions. The phrase originated in the early 1980s, primarily credited to Deng Xiaoping, who sought to move away from the  centralized planning of the Mao era toward a more flexible model. At its core, the concept suggests that while the state maintains a socialist political structure and long-term goals, it can utilize 'capitalist' tools - such as market forces, foreign investment, and private ownership - to modernize the economy and alleviate poverty. This evolution has continued through subsequent leaderships, most recently being refined into 'Xi Jinping Thought,' which emphasizes a New Era of national rejuvenation, increased global influence, and the pursuit of 'common prosperity' within a dictatorship of the proletariat.
